Frequently asked questions
Why hire a lactation consultant?
Hiring a lactation consultant can be extremely beneficial for new mothers who are breastfeeding or planning to breastfeed their infants. Here are some reasons why you might consider hiring us:
Breastfeeding Support: We offer advice on latching techniques, positioning, and addressing common breastfeeding issues.
Troubleshooting: We can help you troubleshoot common issues including nipple pain, low milk supply, slow infant weight gain and engorgement.
Individualized Care: We create a breastfeeding plan that takes into account your unique circumstances and goals.
Education and Information: We educate families with evidenced based information about the benefits of breastfeeding, proper breastfeeding techniques, and the importance of skin-to-skin contact.
Increasing Confidence: Breastfeeding can be challenging, especially for first-time mothers. We can boost your confidence by providing reassurance, encouragement, and practical advice, which can make the breastfeeding journey more enjoyable and less stressful. Often we are laughing or crying or sharing stories together.
Support for Special Circumstances: If you or your baby have specific medical conditions or circumstances that make breastfeeding more challenging, such as preterm birth, tongue-tie, or cleft palate, we can provide specialized support and strategies.
Pumping and Storing Breastmilk: If you plan to pump breast milk or store it for later use, we can guide you on proper pumping techniques, storage guidelines, and maintaining milk supply when separated from your baby.
Returning to Work: We can help you navigate the transition, including setting up a pumping schedule and ensuring your workplace accommodates your needs.
Weaning Support: We can offer guidance on how to wean from nursing gently and with minimal discomfort for both you and your baby.
Emotional Support: Breastfeeding can be an emotional experience, and some mothers may face challenges that lead to feelings of frustration or disappointment. We hope to provide emotional support and help you work through any emotional hurdles.
Our services at Ashley River Lactation can be a valuable investment in your breastfeeding journey and help you and your baby have a positive breastfeeding experience. If you encounter challenges or have questions about breastfeeding, please don't hesitate to seek our help.
When is the best time to have a visit from a lactation consultant?
Prenatally: breastfeeding education prior to birth has been shown to improve breastfeeding outcomes after birth. Meet with us one on one or in a group class to begin learning about how to feed your infant.
Postpartum: Your healthcare team at the hospital or birth center will be great resources to get you going with feedings in the hospital. But when you go home it can become very overwhelming and you will have many questions. Lactation support after delivery is most effective within 2-3 days of returning home from the hospital. We want you to have time to adjust and practice the breastfeeding techniques you learned in the hospital, but also for your milk to develop and "come in" in the larger volumes. That being said, if you need support the day after you get home from the hospital, we can help you. This breastfeeding journey is an individualized process and we tailor our plan to your needs.
It is ok if you don't call us until your baby is older. We have helped newborns up to a year old breastfeed, bottlefeed and wean. So, anytime during your journey is a good time to reach out! We can't wait to meet you!
